Coast Guard Continues to Support Relief Efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Coast Guard cutters, personnel and aircraft continue to actively support hurricane relief efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands alongside local, federal and Department of Defense partner agencies, the service’s Seventh District announced in a Sept. 15 release.
“There is still much relief work to be done in the U.S. Virgin Islands, especially in St. Thomas and St. John,” said Capt. Eric King, Coast Guard Sector San Juan commander. “Following the devastation left by Hurricane Irma, Coast Guard crews continue to aggressively work alongside our partners to protect the citizens of the U.S. Virgin Islands as we re-establish the islands’ port infrastructure, waterways, and support any requests for assistance from responders on the ground.”
The Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Napier arrived at the U.S. Virgin Islands Sept. 14 delivering supplies including dive gear and 100 generators to support ongoing relief efforts as well as other federal government agency personnel to St. Thomas. Meanwhile the Coast Guard Cutter Donald Horsley delivered supplies, equipment and responders to Coral Bay, St. John Sept. 13.
Following the Coast Guard Cutter Valiant’s transfer of 99 evacuees and 13 pets from St. John Sept. 12, it has continued to serve as a command and control platform in the U.S. Virgin Islands between the Coast Guard cutters providing maritime security and supporting relief efforts in the area and requests for assistance from federal and local partner agencies in St. Thomas and St. John.
Since Hurricane Irma’s passing the following Coast Guard Cutters have been supporting Coast Guard efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands: Valiant, Joseph Napier, Joseph Tezanos, Heriberto Hernandez, Donald Horsley and Yellowfin.
Valiant is a 210-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Fla. The 154-foot fast response cutters Joseph Napier, Heriberto Hernandez, Joseph Tezanos, Donald Horsley and the 87-foot coastal patrol boat Yellowfin are homeported in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
