Marine Corps CH-53E Destroyed by Fire

By RICHARD R. BURGESS. Managing Editor

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion heavy-lift helicopter that made an emergency landing on Okinawa, Japan, was destroyed in the fire that apparently began in one of its three engines during flight.

The helicopter, assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462 at Marine Corps Air Station Futemna, made the landing in northern Okinawa on Oct. 11. No injuries were suffered by the crew.

According to the Naval Safety Center’s website, the helicopter suffered Class A damage — which can mean $2 million or more in damage and/or the aircraft is destroyed. Photos taken of the site and posted on the Internet show the helicopter’s fuselage burned completely.
